For many police officers of color, the ongoing protests over the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Rashard Brooks triggered a profoundly complex web of conflicting loyalties spanning their roles and responsibilities as public servants and the pull of identity politics. Documented instances of protestors branding African American or Hispanic officers “Uncle Tom[s]” or “traitor[s]” speak to a pervasive narrative of diverse underrepresentation within many local and regional police departments. Furthermore, national commentary regarding homophobic or misogynistic behavior of police officers toward civilians and law enforcement colleagues raises questions surrounding inclusive cultures and community engagement in an era of social unrest.
